What is an NDIS plan?

An NDIS plan is a formal agreement between a participant and the NDIA that specifies their funded supports, goals, and annual or multi-year budget allocation.

Your NDIS plan is a personalised document prepared by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) that details the supports and services you are eligible to receive under the scheme. It translates your goals and identified needs into a dollar budget and a list of funded support categories.

An NDIS plan typically contains:

  • Your personal goals (work, community participation, daily living, relationships)
  • The types of supports you can access (such as therapy, assistive technology, personal care, community participation)
  • A total annual or multi-year budget broken down by support category
  • Your own funding commitments if applicable

Most plans run for 12 months before the NDIA reviews and updates them, though some participants receive longer cycles (typically up to three years). The plan is created during an NDIS planning meeting where you discuss your circumstances, aspirations, and support needs with an NDIA planner.

Once your plan is approved, you use it to purchase or book supports from registered disability service providers across Perth and Western Australia. If your circumstances or goals change significantly before the review date, you can request an unscheduled plan review.
