Emergency and short-notice respite accommodation
Sometimes a carer gets sick, a household arrangement breaks down suddenly, or a participant needs somewhere safe to stay while longer-term accommodation is sorted out. This is different from browsing SDA housing options for a permanent move: it's about finding a bed and support on short notice, often within a day or two.
Short Term Accommodation (STA), sometimes called respite, is funded in many participants' plans and can be booked at short notice depending on availability. Providers that handle emergency intake usually have a small number of respite or STA rooms held back for exactly this kind of situation, separate from their permanent SDA vacancies.
- Confirm you have STA or respite funding in your current plan
- Ask about same-week or same-day availability, not just general vacancy lists
- Check what support level is provided during the stay (personal care, overnight support, etc)
What it costs
Short term accommodation is charged against STA funding in the NDIS plan at set NDIS price guide rates, which usually cover accommodation and support combined, so the cost to the participant depends on how much STA funding is available rather than a separate market rate.

FAQ
- How quickly can I get emergency respite accommodation in Perth?
- It depends on provider vacancy at the time, but some providers hold rooms specifically for short-notice STA bookings and can accommodate a placement within a day or two if funding is confirmed.
- Do I need a new NDIS plan to access emergency respite?
- No, if your current plan already includes Short Term Accommodation (STA) funding you can use it for an unplanned stay without needing a plan change, though you should check remaining STA budget first.
- What happens if my plan doesn't have STA funding and I need it urgently?
- You or your support coordinator can request an urgent plan review to add STA funding, though timeframes depend on the NDIA and are not guaranteed to be fast.
